Zolton Joseph Popp age 81 of Canonsburg passed away at 10am Tuesday March 6, 2012 in Canonsburg General Hospital after an extended illness. He was born April 19, 1930 in South River, New Jersey a son of the late Joseph and Pearl Prince Popp.
Mr. Popp was a 1948 graduate of Cecil High School and had served proudly in the United States Army as a staff sergeant during the Korean War in the occupation of Germany with the 128th division of the National Guard. He was a ballistics expert. He was a member of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church where he was a major fundraiser collecting aluminum cans contributing thousands of dollars over the years he also served as head usher for the Saturday evening mass. Mr. Popp was a member of the Catholic Men's Club, Canonsburg Sportsmen's Association, the White Eagles Society, the Greater Canonsburg Italian-American Association and the VFW Post 191. He also had served as commander of the American Legion post 253 in Canonsburg.
On November 4, 1951 he married the love of his life Jean (Guadagni) Horner in St. Patrick's Church. For over 60 years they were a loving team. Mr. Popp was a loving husband, father, grandfather, relative and friend. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Mr. Popp was a bricklayer by trade working with Local 11 and 9 bricklayer's union for more than 50 years, he also was a certified welder and a licensed pilot. He enjoyed playing euchre, loved cooking, even going to gourmet cooking classes and was often called upon to speak as the family and friends eulogizer. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and he especially enjoyed sharing his love of the outdoors with family and friends at his camp in Potter County. "God's Country".
Surviving are his beloved wife, Jean: his four children; Marsha (Cory) Lane, Kevin Zolton Popp, John (Lauren) Popp, and Leslie Dorazio; ten grandchildren: Jennifer (Brad) Ring, Cory E. Lane, Jr., Jaclyn Smith, Brian Lane, Jenna and Jessica Dorazio, Madison and Savannah Popp and Bill and Mike Naumoff: two great grandson, Kaden John and Tyler Zolton Ring. Also surviving are a sister Anna Buichl (Hyram Sloan) of Malibu, CA., a sister-in-law, Marilyn Popp and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased in addition to his parents are his step-father Joseph Buichl, a brother Andrew Popp; a sister Lillian Aureli and a granddaughter Hannah Popp.
Friends are welcome from 6-8pm Thursday and 2-4 and 6-8 pm Friday in Salandra Funeral Service, Inc. Joseph P. Salandra owner/supervisor 304 West Pike Street Canonsburg 724-745-8120 where a blessing service will be held at 9am Saturday March 10, 2012 followed at 9:30am by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Patrick Church. Interment will follow in St. Patrick Cemetery, Canonsburg. Full Military rites will be accorded by the VFW post 191 of Canonsburg and the American Legion post 902 of Houston Honor Guard. The Christian Mothers and Guild of St. Patrick will recite the rosary at 3pm Friday in the funeral home. The Catholic Men's Club of St. Patrick will hold services at 7pm Friday in the funeral home.
