William “Bill” Missel, 75, of Canonsburg passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, May 25, 2016 in his home.
He was born on June 25, 1940 in Baltimore, Maryland, the son of the late William H. and Genevieve Walters Missel, Sr.
Bill was a 1958 graduate of Mt. Lebanon High School. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County from 1974-1976, where he studied Criminology.
He proudly served his country with the Army National Guard from 1957-1959 and with the United States Army from 1959-1962, receiving an honorable discharge.
From March 1968 until his retirement in March, 1994, Bill was employed by the Canonsburg Borough Police Department as a Police Officer. After his retirement, he went on to work as a Security Officer for several organizations in the area.
He was a member of the Canonsburg United Presbyterian Church. Bill served his community as the chairman for the Canonsburg-Houston Salvation Army Service Unit, was past President and Lt. Governor of the Canonsburg-Houston Kiwanis Club, past Officer of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 22, past board member of the United Way of Washington County, chairman of the W. B. Houston Fund, and member of the Canonsburg American Legion Post 253.
On January 7, 1967 he married his beloved wife, Selma J. Mackiewicz Missel, who survives.
Also surviving are three loving children, Michael (Yvette) Missel of Whittier, California, Susan Smith of Burgettstown, and Joy (Patrick) Greely of Houston; seven precious grandchildren, Samantha Smith of Uniontown, William and Heather Smith of Houston, Ryan and Hayley Missel of Whittier, California, and Daniel and Matthew Greely of Houston; and a brother-in-law, Don Whitcomb of West Mifflin.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, May Whitcomb.
Friends are welcome from 1:00-7:00 PM on Friday, May 27, 2016 in Salandra Funeral and Cremation Services, Inc., Joseph P. Salandra owner/supervisor, Lin Webb funeral director, 304 West Pike Street, Canonsburg 724-745-8120 where a funeral service will begin at 11:30 AM on Saturday, May 28, 2016 with Rev. Don Coleman officiating. Interment, with full military honors rendered by the VFW Post 191 Honor Guard, will follow in Forest Lawn Gardens, McMurray.
The FOP Lodge 22 will begin a service at 7:00 PM on Friday.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Canonsburg United Presbyterian Church, 112 West Pike Street, Canonsburg, PA 15317.
