William Zubenko age 91 of Strabane died Tuesday July 19, 2011 in Washington Hospital. He was born January 27, 1920 in Ambridge a son of the late Steve and Helen Fyk Zubenko.
Mr. Zubenko lived most of his life in Strabane and was a member of St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church. He served with the Unites States Army during World War II as a corporal with Battery B. 209th Anti Aircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion, receiving the American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with three bronze service stars, a Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one bronze service star the good conduct medal and the World War II Victory medal. Mr. Zubenko had been a self employed union bricklayer and prior to his retirement had been employed at the former McGraw Edison and Cooper Industries.
On July 14, 1951 he married Elizabeth Kish who died November 12, 2010 after 59 years of marriage. Surviving are two sons, William David (Barbara) Zubenko of Hudson, Ohio and Robert Joseph (Christina) Zubenko of Frankfort Ill., five grandchildren David and Mark Zubenko, Josh, Daniel and Jennifer Zubenko, a sister Helen (Theodore) Lazorchak of Strabane and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are six brothers, Michael, John, Andrew, Steve, George, who also died July 19, 2011 and Joseph who died in infancy and a sister Mary Zubenko.

Salandra owner/supervisor 304 West Pike Street Canonsburg 724-745-8120 where a blessing service will be held at 9:30am Saturday July 23, 2011 with funeral services following at 10am in St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church with the Very Reverend Joseph Oleynik , pastor officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Spring Cemetery, Canonsburg. Full Military Rites will be accorded by the American Legion post 902 of Houston and the VFW post 191 of Canonsburg honor guard.
