William J. Cannon

William J. “Bill” Cannon, 71, of Eighty Four passed away on Friday, December 11, 2015 in the Washington Hospital.

He was born on November 25, 1944 in Canonsburg, a son of the late Robert and Eleanor Dayton Cannon.

Bill was a graduate of Canon McMillan High School.  He had been a resident of Eighty Four since 1978.  Bill proudly served with the United States Army in Vietnam from 1968-1969 and was awarded the Bronze Star.  Prior to his retirement from Washington Steel, he had been employed at Hankison.  Bill was the Past Commander of the American Legion Post 902 in Houston and was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 553 in Strabane.  He was also a member of the Labor Temple in Canonsburg, the AGA in Canonsburg, and the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 472 in Conneaut, Ohio.  Bill enjoyed camping and fishing on Lake Erie.  He also enjoyed small engine repair.

On February 12, 1989 he married Linda M. Tinkey Cannon, who passed away on November 23, 2010.

Surviving are a daughter, Lisa A. Cannon of Washington; son, William J. Cannon, Jr. of Washington; two step-sons, John D. (Cindy) Ayres of Canonsburg and Scott W. Ayers of Eighty Four; five siblings, Nancy (the late Bernie) Kozak of North Strabane, Betty (the late Tony) Pallaria of Canonsburg, Richard “Butch” (Connie) Cannon of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Wayne (Linda) Cannon of North Strabane, and Marvin (Kathy) Cannon of Canonsburg; six grandchildren, Christopher Barnes, Edward Bush, Jr., Kirsten Ayres, Megan Ayres, Johnathan Ayres, and Neal Ayres; brother-in-law, Bill Fischer of Library; and several nieces and nephews.

Also surviving is his best friend and dog, Louie.

Deceased, in addition to his parents and wife, is a step-son, Timothy Ayres, who passed away in infancy; and four siblings, Robert (the late Carol) Cannon, Edith “Duffy” Fischer, Judy (the late Joe) Graff, and Oscar Cannon, who passed away in infancy.

Friends are welcome from 2-8 PM on Monday, December 14, 2015 in Salandra Funeral and Cremation Services, Inc., Joseph P. Salandra owner/supervisor, Lin Webb funeral director, 304 West Pike Street, Canonsburg 724-745-8120 where a funeral service will begin at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, December 15, 2015 with Pastor John D. Ayres of Harvest Time Chapel, Canonsburg, officiating.  Interment, with full military rites accorded by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 191 Honor Guard, will follow in Forest Lawn Gardens, McMurray.
