Steve Samila, 88 of Washington passed away on Thursday, June 8, 2017 at home.

He was born on July 9, 1928 in Washington the son of Nicholas and Katherine Polly Samila who preceded him in death as well as his step-mother Anne.

On June 4, 1955 he married Dorothy Jackson who passed away on March 12, 2008.

Mr. Samila was a graduate of Canonsburg High School. He served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. Upon his discharge he went to work for Krogers serving as a meat manager for 35 years and then for 10 years for Century III Foodland. Mr. Samila was a member of St. Michael’s Byzantine Catholic Church and the American Legion Post 175 in Washington.

In addition to spending time with his beloved family, Mr. Samila enjoyed traveling, tending to his garden and most of all, playing poker with his American Legion buddies.

Mr. Samila is survived by his four children, Debbie (Pete) Locante of Brentwood, Leslie (the late Kimberly) Samila of Tarentum, Kathy Samila of Washington and Michele (Kevin) Pusateri of Washington, four beloved grandchildren, Nicole (Donny) Lohr, Philip (fiance’ Briana) Locante, Samantha and Joshua Pusateri, a brother Nick Samila and many nieces, nephews and his four legged buddy, Barkley.

In addition to his wife and parents and brother John he was preceded in death by a number of step-brothers and sisters.

Friends are welcome from 2~8 PM on Sunday, June 11, 2017 in Salandra Funeral and Cremation Services, Inc., Joseph P. Salandra, owner/supervisor, 304 West Pike Street, Canonsburg, 724-745-8120, where a Parastas service will be held at the funeral home at 1:45 pm. on Sunday. Departing prayers will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, June 12, 2017 at the funeral home followed by a Devine Liturgy at 10:00 AM in St. Michael’s Byzantine Catholic Church. Interment will follow in St. Michael’s Cemetery. Full military rites will be accorded by American Legion Post 175 of Washington.
