Sophie J. Kern, 85, of Strabane passed away on Friday, April 17, 2015 in Strabane Woods in Washington, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born on February 9, 1930 in Canonsburg, a daughter of the late John and Nellie Sobolewski.
Sophie was a member of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church in Canonsburg and was a member of the Christian Mothers and Guild. A lifelong resident of Strabane, she was also a member of the SNPJ Lodge 138 in Strabane and the Polish Women's Alliance. Sophie worked at Alexander Co-Op in Strabane for many years.
On July 1, 1950 she married Adolph M. Kern, Jr., who passed away on April 29, 2011.
Surviving is her beloved son, Alan M. Kern of Daphne, AL; three precious grandchildren, Aaron (Michelle) Kern of Alexandria, VA, Toni (Dave) DeMarco Loch of Houston, and Amy (Dave) DeMarco Yackobovich of Las Vegas, NV; a great grandson, Landen Loch; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Deceased, in addition to her parents and husband, is a daughter, Deborah DeMarco; four brothers, John, Zigmund, Alfred, and Edward Sobolewski; and a sister, Thelma.
Friends are welcome from 1-3 and 6-8 PM on Sunday, April 19, 2015 and Monday, April 20, 2015 in Salandra Funeral and Cremation Services, Inc., Joseph P. Salandra Owner/Supervisor, Lin Webb Funeral Director, 304 West Pike Street, Canonsburg 724-745-8120 where departing prayers will begin on Tuesday, April 21, 2015 at 11:30 AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will immediately follow at 12 Noon in St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, 317 West Pike Street, Canonsburg. Interment will follow in St. Patrick Cemetery, Canonsburg.
The Christian Mothers and Guild will recite the Rosary at 2:00 PM on Monday, April 20, 2015 at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Washington Area Humane Society at www.washingtonshelter.org or to the American Cancer Society at www.cancer.org .
