Roy G. Fredericks age 88 of Canonsburg, was called to eternal rest Thursday, February 12, 2015 with his wife of sixty four years by his side in Family Hospice and Palliative Care, Mt. Lebanon. He was born October 5, 1926 in Venice a son of the late Peter and Alberta Powers Fredericks. Mr. Fredericks served with the United States Navy during World War II aboard the U.S.S. Arkansas in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters. When aboard the Arkansas he witnessed the raising of the United States flag at Iwo Jima. He was a life member of the VFW post 191 in Canonsburg where he had been a faithful member of the honor guard since 2003. He served as District Commander in 1968 - 70, 24th district from 1980-81, Western Pennsylvania Membership Chairman in 1971, National Aide de Camp in 1972, State Chief of Staff in 1975-76 and State Historian in 1982. Mr. Fredericks was also a member of the American Legion post 902 in Houston and a member of St. Benedict the Abbot Church in McMurray. An avid golfer, he had been a past member of the Golf Club of Washington. He had been employed as a purchasing agent at Canon Tool Company prior to his retirement.
On May 20, 1950 he married Violet Carelli who survives after sixty four years of marriage. He also leaves behind his son Dennis Roy ( beloved wife Judi) Fredericks of Amity, two grandsons; Brian (Dawn) and Jason Fredericks and his granddaughter Everly, a brother Ronald Fredericks of Florida a sister Frances Funka of Ohio and several nieces and nephews. Deceased in addition to his parents is a sister Patricia Gamble and two brothers, Robert and Raymond Fredericks.
Friends are welcome from 2-4pm Sunday in Salandra Funeral and Cremation Services, Inc. Joseph P. Salandra owner/ supervisor, Lin Webb funeral director 304 West Pike Street Canonsburg 724-745-8120 where a Catholic blessing service will be held at 2pm Sunday. Full military rites will be accorded by the VFW Post 191 Honor Guard at 9am Monday February 16, 2015 at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Cecil Twp. Those attending are asked to meet at the Cemetery at 8:50 am. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Family Hospice and Palliative Care 50 Moffett Street Pittsburgh.
