Peter Wallace "Poopsie" Zofchak, 83, of Houston, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, July 16, 2014 in Canonsburg General Hospital.
He was born in Meadow Lands, PA on April 26, 1931, the son of the late Susan Kaskie Zofchak and Matthew Zofchak.
On June 12, 1954 he married Mary Anne Yarkosky, who passed away on September 29, 2005.
He is survived by three sons, Jeffrey and wife Debra of McDonald, Larry and wife Lisa of Muse, and David and wife Lisa of Houston; seven grandchildren, Jessica, Megan, Leah, Lauren Erney, Lindsey, Derek, and Carly Zofchak; three great grandchildren, Isaiah, Jordan, and Malaina; and two brothers, Dennis of Washington and George and wife Florence, also of Washington. Deceased is a brother, Donald "Luger" Zofchak, Sr.
He retired from Cooper Power Systems in Canonsburg.
Mr. Zofchak joined the Army and took his basic training at Ft. Jackson, SC then went onto paratrooper training and jump school at Ft. Benning, GA within the 506th unit of the 82nd Airborne, making 36 jumps. He was then attached to the 3rd Infantry Division, 15th Regiment, Company B where he went onto the Korean War from 1951-1952, leaving with the rank of Sergeant First Class. He then went to Germany attached with the 2nd Armor Division patrolling the Iron Curtain. He played football in the Rhine Football Conference with the team, winning the German championship in 1952. He earned numerous medals including the Korean Service Medal with 2 Bronze Service Stars, Combat Infantry Badge, Parachute Badge, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Occupation Medal of Germany, and he turned down 3 Purple Hearts. He had a Band of Brothers that he kept in touch with. He referred to life after Korea as "bonus time".
He is the last charter member of the Chartiers Township Volunteer Fire Department. He was a charter member of the Holy Name Society of Miraculous Medal Church, a member of the Fraternal Order of Bears #83, SNPJ Lodge #138 of Strabane, VFW #191, and American Legion Post #902 where he proudly served on the honor guard.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing, spending time with his family, and listening and going to Polka dances and events in the area.
Friends are welcome from 2:00-8:00 PM on Friday, July 18, 2014 in Salandra Funeral Service, Inc., Joseph P. Salandra Owner/Supervisor, 304 West Pike Street, Canonsburg 724-745-8120 where departing prayers will begin at 11:30 AM on Saturday, July 19, 2014. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12 Noon on Saturday in Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, 300 Pike Street, Meadow Lands with Rev. John L. O'Shea officiating. Interment, with full military honors accorded by the VFW Post 191 Honor Guard, will follow in St. Patrick Cemetery, Canonsburg.
