Michael V. Konyk age 91 of Canonsburg passed away Thursday, May 16, 2013 at Broadmoor Senior Living Bridgeville.
He was born June 14, 1921 in Colver, Pa. (Cambria County), the son of the late Vincent and Anna Duzenik Konyk.
Mr. Konyk served as a private during World War II with United States Army's Company C 318th Infantry 80th division. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and the Battle of France, among others. Mr. Konyk's bravery earned him Purple Heart Medal, Good Conduct Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with five Bronze Stars and Silver Star. This bravery also earned him a part time job with Cecil Twp. as a Police officer for 12 years, was inducted to Soldiers and Sailors Hall of Valor in Oakland in October of 1997. He was also an equipment operator for Mt. Lebanon Twp. for 13 years.
Mr. Konyk was catholic by faith. Lived in Canonsburg since 1953, where he was a life member and past Commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 553 of Strabane and also of American Legion Post 902 of Houston, life member of Canonsburg Sportsmen Club and Disabled Veterans of America and a long time member of Canonsburg VFW post 191 and American Legion Post 902 Honor Guard.
On July 12, 1986 he married his second wife Helen M. Harps who passed away on September 16, 1996.
Surviving are two nephews, John (Jack) Nikki) Konyk of Bethel Park and Jeffrey Konyk of South Park.
Deceased also is his first wife Evelyn Potter Konyk who passed away May 5, 1985, a son, Michael V. Konyk, Jr. who passed away November 5, 1987, a brother, John P. Konyk and a sister Mary Konyk.
Friends are welcome on Sunday, May 19, 2013 from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at Salandra Funeral Service, Inc., Joseph P. Salandra owner/supervisor 304 West Pike Street Canonsburg 724-745-8120, where a Blessing Service will be held on Monday, May 20, 2013 at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Gardens, McMurray. Full military honors will be accorded by the combined honor guard of American Legion Post 902 and VFW Post 191. Family suggest in lieu flowers donations be made to Operation Comfort Warriors Fund via Legions website www.legion.org in memory of Mr. Konyk.
