Mary Lou Underkoffler age 86 of Canonsburg passed away Tuesday October 15, 2013 in Canonsburg General Hospital following and extended illness. She was born February 26, 1927 in Canonsburg a daughter of the late John M. and Pauline Gretz Klinger. A graduate of Canonsburg High School class of 1944 Mrs. Underkoffler lived her entire life in Canonsburg where she was a member of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church and the Jefferson College Historical Society. She was one of the first lifeguards at the Town Park swimming pool and had worked at Taylor's Drug Store. She volunteered for many years as a Grey Lady at Canonsburg General Hospital and was a volunteer at the Greenery. Mrs. Underkoffler was very much involved with the Alzheimer's Research Group at UPMC in Pittsburgh and prior to her retirement in February 1983 she had been employed at the former RCA plant in Canonsburg and both RCA and TacTec in Meadowlands, where she served on numerous union committees. She was active in Catholic Scouting as a den mother at St. Patrick Church, and was a member of both the Washington Bottle Club and the Duncan Miller Glass Club of Washington and the RCA Retirement Club.
On July 8, 1944 in Immaculate Conception Church, Washington, she married Floyd A. Underkoffler who passed away October 6, 1987. Surviving are two sons; Floyd Theodore "Ted" Underkoffler (Carmella Farina) of Enfield, Connecticut and Chad (Judith) Underkoffler of Washington, five grandchildren; Paul (Vanessa) Underkoffler, Christine Underkoffler, Jennifer (Geoff) Rouisse, Chad Underkoffler Jr. and Dana (Michael) Ledger, two step grandsons; Robert (Kimberly) Perez and Sean Perez, eight great grandchildren; Mikayla, Emma, Bailey, Kyndall, Mason, Austin, Nicole and Lilly and two nieces. She was the last of her immediate family. Deceased in addition to her husband and parents is her brother Lt. Theodore Klinger who died serving in World War II on January 5, 1944, her grandson Thomas Underkoffler and daughter in law Linda May Underkoffler.
Friends are welcome from 2-8pm Sunday October 20, 2013 in Salandra Funeral Service, Inc. Joseph P. Salandra owner/supervisor 304 West Pike Street Canonsburg 724-745-8120 where departing prayers will be recited at 9:30am Monday October 21, 2013. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 am Monday in St. Patrick Church with interment to follow in St Patrick Cemetery.
