Mary A. “Mamie” Furbee age 67 of Houston passed away peacefully Wednesday February 7, 2018 in her home with her beloved family by her side. Mamie courageously battled a Glioblastoma brain tumor for the past 32 months. She was born February 8, 1950 in Washington a daughter of the late Kenneth “Red” and Catherine R. “Kadie” Spin Haught. Mrs. Furbee lived most of her life in Houston and was a member of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church in Canonsburg. She was a 1968 graduate of Chartiers- Houston High School where she lettered four years in cheerleading and was a member of her Senior class home coming court. She had been employed in the dietary department of Mayview State Hospital for 32 years, since 1975 and then three years at the Southwestern Veterans Center prior to her retirement in 2010 after 35 years of state service. She was a member of Local 2059 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.
Family was the most important thing in Mamie’s life. She followed her children in youth and high school sports and then her granddaughter Samantha as she played softball for Chartiers-Houston High School and the Canonsburg Lady Knights travel team. Mamie was looking forward to seeing her grandsons play ball too. Mamie touched so many lives and made so many friends throughout her life. She lived by the Golden Rule and treated others the way she wanted to be treated, which she instilled in her children. She was a member of the Arden Athletic Club and volunteered at Canonsburg General Hospital. In addition, she worked part time at South Central Elementary School in the cafeteria where she enjoyed helping the children with their lunches. On February 23, 1981 she married her devoted husband of 36 years, Joseph M. Furbee who survives. Also left behind to cherish her memory is her son Michael T. (Amanda) Barringer of Prosperity and her daughter Jody L. (John) Jurcic of Arden, grandchildren Samantha (Matthew) Hartig of Houston, Dr. Kristen (Benjamin) Smith of North Carolina and Chelsie Barringer of Strabane, Great grandchildren; Mason Christopher and Talan Matthew Hartig and Claire Elizabeth Smith and her only brother, William L. (Ida) Haught of Houston
Friends and family are welcome from 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm Friday February 9, 2018 in Salandra Funeral and Cremation Services, Inc. Joseph P. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30am Saturday in St. Patrick Church 317 West Pike Street Canonsburg. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Gardens, McMurray.
