Leonard H. Mavrich

Leonard H. Mavrich age 87 of Canonsburg died Sunday, January 8, 2012 in Canonsburg General Hospital. He was born November 30, 1924 in Strabane, a son of Joseph and Mary Serena Mavrich. He lived most of his life in the Strabane and Canonsburg areas where he was a member of St. Patrick church.
Mr. Mavrich served with the United States Army Air corps in the 2262nd Quartermaster Company Trucking and Aviation during World War II. Prior to his retirement he had been a tool and dye maker at General Motors Fisher Body plant. His hobbies were walking and bowling at the SNPJ. He especially enjoyed family gatherings and picnics. Mr. Mavrich was a member of the American Legion Post 902 of Houston, the VFW Posts 191 of Canonsburg and 553 of Strabane, the Labor Temple and the Fraternal Order of Elks aerie 846 of Canonsburg.
On June 29, 1946 he married Helen Mikus who survives after celebrating 65 years of marriage. Also surviving are two daughters, Mary Jo (Ronald) Porter of Dunbar and Maureen (William) Capwell of Strabane, eight grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Deceased are a son, Keith L. Mavrich and a daughter Janice Salisbury, three sisters, Mary and Stephanie Mavrich, Josephine Puree and a brother Joseph Mavrich. He was the last of his immediate family.
Friends are welcome from 4-8pm Monday in Salandra Funeral Service, Inc. Joseph P. Salandra owner/supervisor 304 West Pike Street 724-745-8120 where a blessing service will be held at 9:30am Tuesday January 10, 2012. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10am Tuesday in St. Patrick Church. Interment will follow in St. Patrick Cemetery. Full military rites will be accorded by the American Legion post 902 of Houston and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 191 of Canonsburg Honor Guard. Family suggest in lieu of flowers, donations to St. Patrick Church in memory of Mr. Mavrich
