Joseph W. Yatchum age 83 of McMurray, formerly of Mather, died at 3:45 am
Saturday, September 26, 2009 in Donnell House,Washington , after fighting a prolonged illness.
He was born January 3, 1926 at Carpentertown, Westmoreland County a son of the late George J. and Mary Zolonerczyk Yatchum.
Mr. Yatchum had served with the United States Army Air corps during World War II in Sicily and Italy in the 830th Bomb squadron, 485th Bomb group of the 55th Bomb wing. He had been involved in the Rome Arno campaign, Poe Valley and saw air combat in the Balkans, Rhineland, central Europe and North Apennines. Prior to his retirement Mr. Yatchum had been employed at the former McGraw Edison Power Systems and Cooper Industries as Chief Development Engineer in the Power Switchgear department, and was a holder of many patents.
He had lived in McMurray since 1957 and was a charter member of St Benedict the Abbot R.C. Church in McMurray and the churches 60 Plus golf league, Junior Achievement of Southwestern PA., Upper Chartiers Chapter and the V.F.W. post 764 of McMurray. Mr. Yatchum had served on the Board of Directors of the Visiting Nurses Assoc. of Washington County, which has since merged with the Washington Hospital.
On March 3, 1951 he married Mary A. Chalfa who passed away August 29, 1998. He is survived by two daughters, Mary Jo (Carl Eagle) Lenarz of Finleyville and Michelle (Jeffrey) Bruce of Beijing, China, two granddaughters Julia Reeves and Amanda Breitinger, greatgrandson Evan Reeves a sister,Cecilia Rutkowski of New York and several nieces and nephews. Deceased in addition to his wife are a grandson Jeremy Lenarz who died December 1, 2006, two brothers John and Ralph Yatchum and a sister Mary Yatchum who died in infancy.
Friends are welcome from 2-4 and 6-8pm Monday in Salandra Funeral Service, Inc Joseph P. Salandra owner/supervisor 304 West Pike Street Canonsburg 724-745-8120 where services will be held at 10:15 am Tuesday, September 29, 2009. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 am in St. Benedict the Abbot R.C. church, McMurray. Entombment will follow in Queen of Heaven cemetery, Peters Twp. Full Military rites will be accorded by the V.F.W. post 191 of Canonsburg and the American Legion post 902 of Houston, Honor Guard.
