Joseph A. Mavrich, fondly referred to as "Mutta" and "Chief", 71, of Strabane passed away on Tuesday, September 9, 2014 in Canonsburg General Hospital.
He was born September 4, 1943 in Canonsburg, a son of Emma C. Herrnberger Mavrich of Strabane and the late Joseph A. Mavrich, Jr.
Joe proudly served his country with the Navy in Vietnam from 1962-1966, where he received the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
A former employee of RCA, Joe went on to retire in 2005 from Diversified Group Admin (DGA) in Houston where he was a systems analyst. He was a member of the SNPJ Lodge #138, the VFW Post 553 in Strabane, and the F.O.E. #861. He was also a member of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Parish. He was an excellent bowler and played in numerous local leagues. He also enjoyed playing softball and golf.
On February 4, 1967 he married Barbara A. Susack, who survives.
Also surviving is his beloved daughter, Dawn M. Mavrich of Houston; a brother, Kenneth J. Mavrich of Strabane; a sister, Beverly L. Hartman of Baltimore, MD; a sister-in-law, Jacqueline Holt of Strabane; nephews, Douglas Holt of Strabane, Valentine DeTemple of Washington, and Gordon Frey of Baltimore; and nieces, Yvonne (Ed) Federouch of Venetia and Linda Evans of Baltimore.
Joe loved his furry family members as well. He leaves behind his cat, Gray Baby and his grand dog, George.
Friends are welcome from 1:00-3:00 PM Friday, September 12, 2014 in Salandra Funeral Service, Inc., Joseph P. Salandra-Owner/Supervisor, Lin Webb-Funeral Director, 304 West Pike Street, Canonsburg 724-745-8120 where a memorial service will immediately follow at 3:00 PM with military honors accorded by the VFW Post 191 Honor Guard.
