Joseph G. Martys age 90 of Washington, formerly of Canonsburg, died Friday, May 7, 2010 at 8:10 PM in the Washington County Health Center.
He was born September 2, 1919, in Primrose, Pa., the son of the late John and Mary Zezutek Martys.
Mr. Martys served during World War II with United States Army in the Italian Campaign, which in that he received Good Conduct Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Service with three Battle Stars and World War II Victory Medal.
He spent most of his adult life in Canonsburg, where he was a member of St. Genevieve Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 191 and White Eagles Lodge 1746.
Mr. Martys was a Steel Worker for LTV Steel Company.
On April 22, 1944 he married Margaret S. Hulpa, who died on June 28, 2006.
Surviving are two sons, Joseph "Tom" (Judy) Martys of Coraopolis; Timothy M. Martys of Washington; two grandchildren, Christopher and Bethany Martys and eleven nieces and nephews. Mr. Martys was the last of his immediate family.
Deceased are two sisters, Tess Filius and Helen Gross also are four brothers, Thomas, Stanley, John and Frank Martys.
Friends are welcome on Monday, May 10, 2010 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Salandra Funeral Service, Inc., Joseph P. Salandra owner/supervisor, 304 West Pike Street Canonsburg, 724-745-8120 where a Blessing Service will be held on Tuesday, May 11, 2010 at 11:30 AM. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 12:00 PM in St. Patrick Church. Interment will follow at St. Patrick's Cemetery, Canonsburg. Full Military Rites will be accorded by the combined honor guard of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 191 of Canonsburg and American Legion Post 902 of Houston. Family suggests in lieu of flowers donations to be made to Spina Bifida Association of Western Pa. 134 Shenot Road Wexford, Pa. 15090-7455, in memory of Mr. Martys.
