John F. Walko, Sr., 101, of Canonsburg passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family at his granddaughter Lisa's home, with whom he lived with, on Saturday, February 27, 2016.
He was born on May 2, 1914 in Wall, Pennsylvania the son of the late Michael and Elizabeth Kurcharchik Walko.
John was employed by American Steel and Wire Company of Donora. He had also worked in construction. He went on to work for PennDot until his retirement.
He enjoyed all of the Pittsburgh sports teams, playing Euchre, traveling to various places and visiting many beaches, and was a wonderful storyteller to his grandchildren.
In May of 1938 he married Sue Chervenak Walko, who passed away on November 14, 1969 after 31 years of marriage.
Mr. Walko is survived by his children, Geraldine Barbosky, John Walko, Jr., Darlene Mann, and Roberta Orton; grandchildren, Lisa Barboksy, John and Karen Walko, Christine and Eric Kush, Michael Walko, Jason Hiles, Cpt. Jessica Mann, David Mann, Eric Orton, and Nathan Mann; great grandchildren, Desiree, Amanda, Eric, Kaitlin, Jacob, and Corinne; and great-great grandchildren, Jackhenry, Abigail, and Eric Alonzo.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Walt Barbosky; daughter-in-law, Delores Walko; brothers, Michael, George, and Steve Walko; and sisters, Mary Kascik, Elizabeth Kocsis, and Barbara Kosanvich.
He was the last of his immediate family.
At the request of the deceased there will be no viewing. A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.
His legacy of enjoying life, telling jokes, his sense of humor, and lessons in life with a strong family connection will live on in all of us.
