John Stanley Progar

John Stanley Progar age 97 of Strabane, died at 9:50pm Tuesday May 17, 2011 at Golden Living of South Hills.
He was born December 2, 1913 in North Fayette Twp. a son of Anton and Antonia Progar. Mr. Progar enlisted in the U.S. Army on February 20, 1941 and was first assigned to the 71st Coastal Artillery. He was then reassigned to the 572nd Antiaircraft Artillery Automatic Battalion. On November 26, 1944 he was assigned to the 12th Armored Division in Europe and was awarded the Good Conduct medal, 1 Bronze Star, 3 Battle Stars, Certificate of Merit, French Commemorative Medal, European Campaign Medal with battle stars for Campaigns in Rhineland, Central Europe and the Ardennes. He was discharged as a Staff Sergeant on November 30, 1945.
Prior to his retirement Mr. Progar was employed at the former McGraw Edison in Canonsburg. He was a member of the American Legion post 902 in Houston and the V.F.W. post 902 of Canonsburg, the United Steel Workers of America, the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craft workers local #11, KSKJ St. Jerome Lodge 153 and the SNPJ Lodge 138 both of Strabane and was a Lifetime member of the 572nd AAA Association.
On January 2, 1943 he married Mary P. Sweton (Cveton) who died October 6, 2001. Surviving are two sons, David Progar of Erie and Donald Progar of Strabane, two grandchildren, Christopher and Selina Progar and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Progar was the last of his immediate family. Deceased are his sister Mary, and four brothers, Anthony, Joseph, Frank and Lou Progar.
Friends are welcome from 2-4 and 6-8pm Friday in Salandra Funeral Service, Inc. Joseph P. Salandra owner/supervisor 304 West Pike Street Canonsburg where a blessing service will be held at 9:30 am Saturday May 21, 2011. Interment will follow in St. Patrick Cemetery. Full Military rites will be accorded by the VFW post 191 of Canonsburg and the American Legion post 902 of Houston.
