John Martincic

December 25, 1915 — November 24, 2014

John Martincic, age 98, formerly of Canonsburg, PA, passed away Monday evening, November 24, 2014 at his home in Tionesta, PA.

He was born on December 25, 1915 in Oakdale, PA, the son of the late Frank and Lucy (Strah) Martincic.

John mined coal for nearly 40 years in the Canonsburg area. He also worked on cars, especially during the trying times of coal mine strikes and the great depression.

He was active all of his life and especially enjoyed traveling (many times to his parents' homeland of Slovenia), snowmobiling, hunting, fishing, splitting wood, and sitting around the camp fire talking with friends and family. He was a member of the SNPJ Lodge 138 in Strabane for more than 80 years and the Strabane KSKJ. He was recently honored but the Forest County Historical Society as the oldest resident of Forest Co. Pennsylvania.

On January 29, 1939 he married Mary Gretsky and they shared their lives together until her death in 2008.

Surviving are his two children, John J. Martincic of Tionesta and Thomas J. (Sharon) Martincic of Heath, OH; his brother, Jacob Martincic; his grandchildren, John E. (Lorraine) Martincic of Tionesta, Deborah (Lewis) Kiffer of Starr, SC, Robert (Georgia) Martincic of Greenville, SC, Thomas (Kelly) Martincic of Ava, MO, and Jeffrey (Denise) Martincic of Heath, OH; nine great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. Another great-great grandchild is expected in December.

In addition to his parents and wife, John was also preceded in death by his brothers, Frank and Joseph; sisters, Francis Bodvake and Dorothy Koklich; and daughter-in-law, Karen Black Martincic.

Friends are welcome from 2-4 and 6-8 PM on Friday, November 28, 2014 in Salandra Funeral Service, Inc., Joseph P. Salandra Owner/Supervisor, Lin Webb Funeral Director, 304 West Pike Street, Canonsburg 724-745-8120 where a Blessing Service will begin at 9:00 AM Saturday, November 29, 2014. Interment will follow in St. Patrick Cemetery, Canonsburg.
