John C. Haines age 87 of Canonsburg died unexpectedly Saturday September 29, 2012 in Golden Living of South Hills. He was born November 2, 1924 in Sherman, New York a son of the late Emory H and Elsie Josephine Powers Haines. Mr. Haines served as a Technical Sergeant in the United States Army Air corps during World War II and was a member of both the American Legion post 902 of Houston where he had been past commander and the VFW post 191 of Canonsburg. He lived most of his life in the Canonsburg area where he was a member of St. Patrick Church. Prior to his retirement Mr. Haines had been employed as a mechanical assembler at the former McGraw Edison Power Systems.
He was a life member of the North Strabane Volunteer fire department and was a member of the Labor Temple Association. Mr. Haines enjoyed woodworking, reading, watching all Pittsburgh professional sports teams and hunting. He leaves behind his faithful dog Buddy.
On October 20, 1946 he married Josephine Ortuso who passed away November 2, 1998. Surviving are two daughters; Cheryl Ann Santoro of Canonsburg and Kimberly Jo (John Dzielski) Haines of Brooklyn NY, three sons, Emory J. (Jessie) Haines of Severn MD, Dennis R. ( Kim Deluca) Haines of Monessen, and John E. (Ginger) Haines of Canonsburg, a brother Jack W. (Katherine) Haines of Canonsburg, ten grandchildren, six great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Deceased including his wife and parents are his grandson Justin Santoro, son in law Dennis Santoro, a brother Royal C. (Sonny) Haines and a sister Ella Mae Anderson.
Friends are welcome from 2-8pm Monday October 1, 2012 in Salandra Funeral Service, Inc. Joseph P. Salandra owner/supervisor 304 West Pike Street Canonsburg 724-745-8120 where a blessing service will be held at 8:30 am Tuesday, October 2, 2012. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated a 9 am Tuesday in St Patrick Church with interment to follow in Forest Lawn Gardens, McMurry. Full military rites will be accorded at graveside by the American Legion post 902 and the VFW post 191 combined honor guard.
