John Basso age 85 of Muse died Thursday February 4, 2010 in the Washington County Health Center. He was born November 5, 1924 in Caretta WVa., a son of the late Gildo and Maria Basso.
Mr. Basso lived in Giais Provenza di Udine, Italy for ten years and most of his life in the Muse and Canonsburg areas. He attended Cecil High School and the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and had served with the United States Army during World War II. In his youth he played the accordion with local bands. He enjoyed doing oil painting and oil sketches of portraits and landscapes for family and friends. Prior to his retirement he had been employed as a steel roller at the former Universal Cyclops in Lawrenceville for 36 years.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Pollak Basso, a son John Basso Jr. of Canonsburg, a daughter Christina Basso of Finleyville, a stepdaughter, Mary Ann Raiford, and a step grand daughter Meredith Raiford, both of Jacksonville Florida, a sister in law Elaine Basso of Houston and many nieces and nephews. Deceased are a daughter Carol Ladzinski and a brother Bruno Basso.
Friends are welcome from 2-8 pm Sunday in Salandra Funeral Service, Inc. Joseph P. Salandra owner/supervisor 304 West Pike Street Canonsburg (724-745-8120) were services will be held at 12:15 pm Monday February 8, 2010. Interment with full military rites will be accorded by the VFW post 191 of Canonsburg and the American Legion post 902 of Houston in the National Cemetery of the Allegheny's Cecil Township.
