John K. Abraham

John K. Abraham 88, of Washington, formerly of Canonsburg, died Tuesday, February 3, 2009 at 10:10 AM in the Donnell House, Washington.
He was born in Waynesburg, the son of Albert and Mary Elias Abraham.
Mr. Abraham graduated from Canonsburg High School, Class of 1939. He attended Waynesburg College from 1939 to 1942. After being discharged in 1945, he continued his education at Waynesburg College and received a B.S. Degree in 1947. Furthered his education graduated from University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) with a Masters Degree. Throughout both high school and college he was a talented wrestler.
He served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II taking flight training graduating from the flight program in January 28, 1944 with rank of 2nd Lt. as a naval flyer, transferred to the Marine Air Service for advance flight training on B-25 aircraft, in December of 1945 and than to Naval Engineering School, being discharge on January 28, 1946. In 1959 was discharged from reserve duty as Captain.
Mr. Abraham started with Chartiers Houston High School as a teacher from 1956-1966 later Home and School Visitor from 1966-1977, Principal of High School from1966-1977, Management Assistant 1977-1978 and Superintendent of Schools from 1978- retiring in 1985. Through those years, being Wrestling and football coach at the high school level. From1989-2003 he was Administrator for Crime Victim/ Witness Assistance Program.
Through his life time, John received several awards, Exemplary Citizens Award-Sept. 1992, Congressional Award -Sept. 1993, Legislative Citation Award-1993, Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame Washington/Greene County Chapters Meritorious (this was for refereeing wrestling t high school and college level) and Achievement Award- May 1994.
He was a member of St. Johns Russian Orthodox Church, Canonsburg, Chartiers Lodge 297 Masonic, Teacher's Association, Shiners, Marine Corp League, American Legion Post 902 of Houston and the Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 191 of Canonsburg.
Mr. Abraham was a devote husband, father, grandfather and friend to all he knew.
He enjoyed playing cards with family and friends.
On August 25, 1946 he married Marian Zacour, who passed away on January 27, 1997.
Surviving are three daughters, Joyce (Ronald) Odowski of Palmetto, Fl., Donna Marie (Dennis A.) Baron of Charlotte, NC., Deborah Jon (Thomas) Regets of Washington, formerly of Fredrick Town, five grandchildren, Lisa Marie Powell, Captain Jason Baron (serving in Kuwait at this time), Sonya Nicole Baron, First Lt. Jonathan Regets stationed at Fort Rucker, Alabama and Mary Elizabeth Regets, brother, Paul Abraham of Houston, Companion and best friend Elizabeth Mulkern.
Deceased are daughter, Joni Kay Abraham, who died in infancy, two brothers, Michael and Daniel Abraham.
Friends are welcome on Friday, February 6, 2009 from 2:00 to 8:00 PM at Salandra Funeral Service, Inc., Joseph P. Salandra owner/ supervisor, 304 West Pike Street Canonsburg 724-745-8120 www.salandrafunerals.com, where funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 7, 2009 at 11:00 AM, with Rev. Terry Saughnessy and Rev. Duane Thompson officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Spring Cemetery, Canonsburg. Full military rites will be accorded by the combined honor guards Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 191 of Canonsburg and American Legion Post 902 of Houston. Donations can be made to Donnell House or to Crime Victim/Witness Assistance Program in Memory of John. Chartiers Lodge 297 Masonic Service will be held Friday at 7:30 PM at the funeral home.
