Gilbert (Gil) David Yurus, 78 of Strabane, Pennsylvania, went to be with the Lord on Easter Sunday, April 24, 2011. He was born on July 7, 1932, in Canonsburg, son of the late Andy and Anna (Yarkosky) Yurus.
Mr. Yurus graduated from Canonsburg High School and Penn Commercial College. Upon graduation he was employed by U.S. Senator Edward Martin. Afterwards he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, serving in Korea and later in Japan. He had a long career as an Engineering Order Analyst at McGraw Edison (Cooper Power Systems), Canonsburg.
Mr. Yurus served as a Church Organist, Eucharistic Minister, Commentator, Lector, and was on the on the parish council for St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church in Canonsburg. He was a life time member of the Knights of Columbus. He volunteered time and service with Pastoral Care and served as a Eucharistic Minister at Canonsburg Hospital. He was a member of the Czechoslovak Society of America, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, KSJK, Jednota First Catholic Slovak Union, Sokol, and SNPJ. He also served as the Master of Ceremonies for the Annual Canonsburg's 4th of July Parade for over 20 years, and was involved the 4th of July Parade from its very beginning.
Early in his life Gil was professional musician leading his own polka band, and teaching piano and accordion. He hosted the Gil Yurus Polka Review on WKEG in Washington and on WARO in Canonsburg for over 28 years. He loved broadcasting polka music, and for over 20 years signed off with, "And always remember, if you should go out into the world to look for a friend, it's doubtful that you'll find a single one. But on the other hand, if you would go out into the world to be a friend, it won't be too long until you have friends all around. So, until we meet again, this is Gil Yurus, hoping that our friendship will never end."
Gil loved spending time with his wife Mary Ann and his family, especially his grandchildren. He was married to Mary Ann (Woyicki) Yurus for over 52 years of Houston.
On May 10, 1958 he married Mary Ann (Woyicki) Yurus who survives. Also surviving are four children, Maureen (Frank) Castulik of St. Charles, Missouri, Sharon (Frank) Korleski of Simpsonville, South Carolina, David (Samantha) Yurus of Rosharon, Texas, and Brenda (Tom) Chaillou of Calloway, Maryland, five grandchildren Robert and Christina Korleski, Jonah and Ruby Chaillou and Alexander Yurus .Deceased are his step-mother, Mary Potchar Yurus, a sister Elona Yurus who died in Infancy and step sister Mary Gordon.
Friends are welcome from 2 " 4 and 6- 8 Pm Wednesday and Thursday in Salandra Funeral Service, Inc.; Joseph P. Salandra owner/supervisor 304 West Pike Street Canonsburg, where a blessing service will be held at 9:30 am Friday, April 29, 2011 followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am in St. Patrick Church. Entombment will then follow in Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Peters Twp. Full Military rites will be accorded by the VFW Post 191 of Canonsburg and American Legion Post 902 of Houston combined honor guard. The Christian Mothers and Guild of St. Patrick's will recite the rosary at 3pm Thursday in the funeral home. Knights of Columbus services will be held at 7:30pm Thursday in the funeral home. The family suggest memorial contributions be made to St. Patrick Church building fund
