World War II Veteran
George Zubenko age 86 of Canonsburg died Tuesday July 19, 2011 in St Clair Hospital following an extended illness. He was born March 30, 1925 in Canonsburg a son of the late Steve and Helen Fyke Zubenko.
Mr. Zubenko lived his entire life in the Canonsburg area where he was a member of St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church. He served from 1943 until 1945 with the 12th Air Corps, 319th Bomber group, 439th Squadron as a Bomber Tail Gunner, who participated in 39 missions serving in Europe, Africa and the Middle Eastern Campaign He received four battle stars, the Air medal and the Croix de Guerre avec Palme. The friendships he developed with his crew members lasted his lifetime.
In 1989 after 42 years of service as a mechanical designer he retired from Cooper Industries, formerly McGraw Edison Power Systems in Canonsburg.
On July 21, 1948 he married Agnes M. Guidos who died March 12, 2011. Surviving are his children Dr. George S. (Dr. Wendy) Zubenko of Wexford, Carol (Anthony) Bevec and Karen (Brian) Conroy, both of Canonsburg, two grand children Natalie and Nicollette Bevec, a sister Helen (Theodore) Lazorchak of Strabane, many nieces and nephews. Deceased in addition to this wife and parents are six brothers, Michael, John, Steve, Andrew, William who also died July 19, 2011 and Joseph, who died in Infancy and a sister Mary Zubenko.
Friends are welcome from 2-8pm Thursday in Salandra Funeral Service, Inc. Joseph P. Salandra owner/supervisor 304 West Pike Street Canonsburg 724-745-8120 where a blessing service will be held at 9:30am July 2011. Funeral Services will be held at 10am in St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church with the Very Reverend Joseph Oleynik, pastor officiating. Interment will take place in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Cecil Twp. on Monday July 25, 2011. Full Military Rites will be accorded by the VFW post 191 of Canonsburg and the American Legion post 902 of Houston honor guard. Parastas services will be held at 7:30 pm Thursday in the funeral home.
