George M. Veres age 91 of Canonsburg, died Friday, May 13, 2011 in his home surrounded by his family.
He was born December 4, 1919 in Canonsburg, the son of the late Matthew and Margaret Slezak Veres.
Mr. Veres served with the Untied States Army during World War II, as a staff sergeant, serving in New Guinea and Philippine Islands, receiving Combat Infantry Badge, Asiatic-Pacific Service medal and Philippines Liberation Ribbon.
He lived most of his life in Canonsburg, where he was a member of St. Patrick Church, Canonsburg Senior Citizens, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 191 of Canonsburg, American Legion Post 902 of Houston and the French Club.
Mr. Veres enjoyed spending time and cheering on his grandchildren at sporting events. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed gardening.
Mr. Veres was the last of his immediate family.
On November 14, 1948 he married Viola (Vi) Martino, who survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Judy (David) Homerosky and Kimberly (Kim) (John) Cecchine both of Canonsburg, six grandchildren, Matthew and Jason Homerosky, Corinne (Avery) Selvey, Ariane Homerosky, Justin Fee and Alexander Homerosky, six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Deceased also are two sisters, Ann Manko and Elizabeth Kurnal, and three brothers, Steve, Joseph and John Veres.
Friends are welcome on Sunday, May 15, 2011 from 4 to 8 PM in Salandra Funeral Service, Inc.; Joseph P. Salandra owner/supervisor, 304 West Pike Street Canonsburg 724- 745-8120, where Blessing Service will be held Monday at 12:30 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 1:00 PM in St Patrick Church. Interment will follow in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Canonsburg. Full military rites will be accorded by the combined honor guard VFW Post 191 of Canonsburg and American Legion Post 902 of Houston.
