George Edward Ramoth

George Edward Ramoth age 86 of Canonsburg died Saturday July 2,2011 following an extended illness. He was born March 7, 1925 in Passaic New Jersey a son of the late Fred and Florence Neiman Ramoth.
He was the official greeter of Pristine Fields, waving to all who came and left the development. He loved his family, his church, his Masonic affiliations and veterans groups.
Surviving are his wife Janis whom he married August 7, 1948, two daughters Nanci (Barney) Lintula of Cecil and Susan (Nicolas) Barchuk of Clifton, New Jersey and two grandsons, Gregory (Jennifer) Barchuk of East Norriton, PA and Vincent (Laura) Saracino of Pomona, New York, a brother Robert (Diana) Ramoth of Pompton Plaines NJ a treasured sister in law Carol Spruill of Brookfield Wisconsin and many cousins nephews and nieces. Deceased are two brothers Richard and Fred and two infant sisters
Mr. Ramoth was an active member of the Carlstadt Presbyterian Church, Carlstadt, New Jersey, serving on the session, a choir member and president of the men's club. In Beach Haven he attended Holy Innocents Episcopal Church and rose every Sunday as a "guest". He joined the 1st United Presbyterian Church of Houston and served on their session and was also a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Canonsburg. For many years he joined his wife at Kanuga, an Episcopal retreat in Henderson N.C., where he "Ecumenicalized" the facility, serving on the board of visitors. He gave Bishops from across the country and from England scrolled crosses he made. George was a Christian clown, receiving his training at Kanuga. In NJ he visited Sunday schools, nursing homes and hospitals.
He earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Montclair University and taught industrial studies at Clifford Scott High School for 20 years. The previous 20 years were spent as a lineman for Public Service Electric and Gas of Hackensack NJ. He retired in 1990 and spent the next decade at his home in Beach Haven NJ, where he was a locksmith and carpenter. He moved to Cecil Twp. in 2001 and enjoyed his, home, friends and neighbors in Pristine Fields. Mr. Ramoth was a past master of Eclipse Lodge #259 F&AM and was a current member of Chartiers Lodge #257 and Chartiers Chapter, Order of Eastern Star #97. He was also a member of the Royal Arch Masons of Rutherford, NJ. George was a veteran of World War II he served in Company E 117th of the 30th Division (old Hickory) as an Infantryman. He was wounded by a German youth in a battle in Rhineland, Germany and received the Purple Heart. During his hospitalization in France, he heard his company was deporting back to the United States, and he literally walked and hiked to the port of call of the Queen Mary, in order to return with his company. He received the American Theatre Ribbon, European-African Middle Eastern Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, New Jersey Distinguished Service Medal, the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Clusters. He was in the service three years, in battle for seven months.
He was past commander of the of the military order of Purple Heart Chapter in Waretown, NJ , member of the Combat Infantryman's Association, and Cecil American Legion Post #793. He was also an associate member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Canonsburg.
Friends are welcome from 2-4 and 6-8pm Tuesday in Salandra Funeral Service, inc. Joseph P. Salandra owner/supervisor 304 West Pike Street Canonsburg, 724-745-8120. Services will be held at a time to be announced on Wednesday, July 6, 2011 in the 1st United Presbyterian Church of Houston with the reverend C.J. Haury officiating, Please meet at church. Interment will follow in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Cecil Twp. Full Military rites will be accorded by the VFW post 191 of Canonsburg and the American Legion Post 902 of Houston Honor Guard. Masonic services will be held Tuesday evening in the Funeral Home.
