George R. Lucas, Sr. age 79, of Hickory, died Friday, May 22, 2009, at 11:05 PM in Strabane Woods, Washington.
He was born March 28, 1930, in Bairford, Pa., the son of the late George and Mary McMurdo Lucas.
Mr. Lucas served in United States Army, with the 439th Battalion Army Engineer's, which they helped rebuild Korea and rebuilt one of the longest highway bridges called Kilra Chon. George and the battalion received Meritorious Unit Commendation for "exceptionally meritorious" conduct in performance of outstanding service. He also received a citation from President Harry Truman the National Defense Service, the Korean Service, which he received four Bronze Stars, and the United Nations Service Medals
He worked for ET Works as a diesel mechanic.
Mr. Lucas was involved and belonged to Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 191 of Canonsburg, SNPJ lodge # 138 of Strabane and former member of American Legion Post 902 of Houston.
He loved to fish at Lake Erie, garden and work on small engines.
Surviving are three sons, Michael Lucas of Canonsburg; George R. (Jane) Lucas of Hickory; Tom (Kathy) Lucas of Washington; one daughter, Lori (Greg) Kern of Strabane; seven grandchildren, Jen Lucas, Michael Lucas, Jr., Katelyn Kern, Sara and Cody Wood, Carman Lucas and Jeffery Lucas; one great-grand daughter Avery Jade; one brother, Jack Lucas of Butler, Pa.; and one sister, Mary Lloyd of Tarentum, Pa. and several nieces and nephews.
Friends are welcome on Monday, May 25, 2009 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Salandra Funeral Service, Inc., Joseph P. Salandra owner/supervisor, 304 West Pike Street Canonsburg, where Funeral Services will be held at 9:00 AM. Interment will follow at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Bridgeville. Full military rites will be accorded by the combined honor guard of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 191 of Canonsburg and American Legion Post 902 of Houston.
