George Hancher age 84 of Leesburg, VA, formerly of McMurray, died April 26, 2010 at his home.
He was born February 27, 1926, in Central City, PA., the son of the late George and Catherine Kutza Hancher.
Mr. Hancher was a graduate of Penn State with a degree in mechanical engineering.
During World War II, he served as a Staff Sergeant/ Aerial Gunner in the Army Air Force, flying numerous missions in the South Pacific and was awarded two Distinguishing Flying Cross Medals for his service.
Mr. Hancher founded his firm, Heavy Duty Maintenance Engineers in 1977, and continued working until his mid-70's.
He was a long time member of St. Michael's Byzantine Catholic Church, where he used his engineering talents to contribute to the beautification of the church.
Mr. Hancher loved to cook and work in the yard.
He was a devoted husband for 43 years to Bette Jane Allen, who he married on May 27, 1960 and who died on August 5, 2004.
Mr. Hancher was a loving hands-on father to his seven children, who survive, Gregory Hancher of Finleyville; Geoffrey Hancher of Eighty Four; Stephen Hancher of Canonsburg; Joel Hancher of Bridgeville; Renee Hancher of Leesburg, VA.; Tania Gutierrez of Los Banos, CA.; Gretchen Hancher of South Park; eight grandchildren; Gregory Hancher, Jr., Hana and Nori Thurman, Alina and Valora Gutierrez and Sasha, Grant and Alexander Hancher; four brothers; Michael Hancher of Central City; Paul Hancher of New Port Richey, FL.; Peter Hancher of Margate, FL.; Franklin Hancher of Columbia Station, OH.; four sisters, Ann Albert of Windber; Helen Shima of Central City; Sylvia Chasar of Rootstown, OH.; and Sonia Johnson of Laurel, MD.; and many nieces and nephews.
Deceased are two sisters, Sue Jackimetz and Mary Gernsback and three brothers, John, Fred and Alex Hancher.
Friends are welcome on Sunday, May 2, 2010 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Salandra Funeral Service, Inc., Joseph P. Salandra owner/supervisor, 304 West Pike Street Canonsburg 724-745-8120, where a Blessing Service will be held on Monday, May 3, 2010 at 9:00 AM. Divine Liturgy will follow at 9:30 AM in St. Michael's Byzantine Catholic Church, in Canonsburg, with Father Joseph Jugan officiating. Private family interment will follow in Somerset County Memorial Park, Somerset, PA.
Full military rites will be accorded by the combined Honor Guard of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 191 and American Legion Post 902 o Houston with also Patriots Guard Riders. Family suggest donations be made in memory of Mr. Hancher to St. Michael's Byzantine Catholic Church Building Fund 166 East Pike Street, Canonsburg, PA. 15317
