Edward F. Mals age 84, of Washington, formerly of Canonsburg, passed away on Wednesday, July 25, 2012 in Washington Hospital following a brief illness.
He was born on January 23, 1928 in Canonsburg the son of the late Frank and Helen Kowalski Mals.
Mr. Mals was a graduate of Canonsburg High School class of 1947. After graduating, he served with the United States Navy during the Korean War on the USS Antietam CVS-36 receiving the National Defense Medal; Korean Service Medal (1 star); Navy Occupation Service Medal and the United Nations Service Medal. After his honorable discharge, he worked for 42 years, as a draftsman for the former Pa. Transformer Co. Canonsburg, retiring in 1990.
In his earlier years Mr. Mals lived in Canonsburg, for the last 50 years he lived in Washington. He was a member of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church in Meadowlands, American Legion Post 902 of Houston, PNA White Eagles Lodge #1746 of Canonsburg; SNPJ Lodge#138 of Strabane and the Pulaski Club of Washington.
In his earlier years was an avid golfer, enjoyed listening to Polka music, cooking and watching the Steelers, but especially spending time with friends and family.
On August 12, 1961 he married his beloved wife of 50 years, JoAnn Urbancic, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Lawrence E. Mals of Lagrangeville, N.Y; a daughter, Susan M. Mals of Pittsburgh and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased also is a brother, Harry Mals.
Friends are welcome on Friday, July 27, 2012 from 2:00 to 8:00 PM at Salandra Funeral Service, Inc., Joseph P. Salandra owner/supervisor, 304 West Pike Street Canonsburg 724-745-8120, where a Blessing Service will be held on Saturday, July 28, 2012 at 9:15 AM. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:00 AM in Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church Meadowlands, with Fr. Carmen D'Amico as celebrant. Interment will follow in Queen of Heaven Cemetery; Peters Twp. Full Military Honors will be accorded by the combined honor guard VFW post 191 of Canonsburg and American Legion Post 902 of Houston.
