Andrew (Whitey) Zubenko age 87 of Canonsburg died Thursday, April 14, 2011 in the Donnell House, Washington. He was born September 16, 1923 in Canonsburg a son of the late Steve and Helen Zubenko.
Mr. Zubenko lived most of his life in Strabane and was a faithful member of St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church and choir for over 50 years. He had served with the United States Army in the 458th Amphibian Truck Company. Prior to his retirement he had been employed as a Forman in the Switchgear department of the former McGraw-Edison Power Systems in Canonsburg. He was a member of the Pittsburgh Cathedral Choir, the American Legion Post 902 of Houston, the SNPJ Lodge 138 of Strabane and was an avid bowler and golfer.
On June 20, 1970 he married Margaret Gomber, who died May 8, 2007. He is survived by two brothers, William Zubenko of Strabane and George Zubenko of Canonsburg, a sister Helen (Theodore) Lazorchak of Strabane and many nieces and nephews. Deceased are a sister Mary Zubenko and four brothers, Michael, John, Steve and Joseph Zubenko, who died in infancy.
Friends are welcome from 2-8pm Sunday in Salandra Funeral Service, Inc. Joseph P. Salandra owner/supervisor 304 West Pike Street Canonsburg 724-745-8120 where a blessing service will be held at 10:30 am Monday, April 18, 2011. Funeral services will be held at 11am in St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church with the Very Reverend Joseph Oleynik, pastor officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Spring Cemetery, Canonsburg. Full military rites will be accorded by the VFW post 191 of Canonsburg and the American Legion post 902 of Houston combined honor guard.
Parastas services will be held at 7pm Sunday in the funeral home.
