Agnes Helen Bevec

Agnes Helen Bevec, 103, lifelong resident of Canonsburg's famed "Blaine  Avenue", passed away on Sunday, January 28th in her home after a long life well-lived.

"Aggie" was born on January 21, 1921, to Konstanty and Mary Prusak who, like many young people of that time, immigrated to Western Pennsylvania from Poland to work and create a better life for themselves and their families. She grew up with her 5 sisters in the family home she was born in on Blaine Avenue, raised her own family in the home, and died there as she wished. She attended St. Genevieve Catholic School and Canonsburg High School. Aggie's first job was at the Standard Restaurant and then, like many women of the area, she went to Neville Island, PA during WWII to work as a welder helping to build the landing craft that were used in the Normandy invasion. She was a real Rosie the Riveter. Agnes also worked at Nolla Shop, Canonsburg Pottery, and later in life she worked at Bevec Printing which her sons Frank and John started.

On May 20, 1939, Agnes and Frank P. Bevec were united in holy matrimony at St. Genevieve Catholic Church in Canonsburg. They were blessed with three children who are left behind to cherish her memory: Sr. Sandra Bevec, Medina, OH; Frank (Linda) Bevec, Kenosha, WI; and John (Michelle) Bevec, Strabane. She was also blessed with five beautiful grandchildren: JP, Tony, Frank III, Claire, and Grace, and beloved grand dogs Sidney, Sadie, Mae, and Daisy.

Agnes was known by many and loved being around people. She especially loved meeting and talking to everyone and telling stories about her life and the people of Canonsburg and Strabane. She could always find some connection with just about anyone she met. She enjoyed volunteering at the local polls during elections, playing bingo and sewing, keeping up with politics, current events, and neighborhood activity. She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and word games. Aggie loved Polish music, was proud of her heritage, and was known for her delicious bread, baked sweets, her award-winning blue-ribbon apple pie, and her pierogi. She especially loved her children and grandchildren and was very proud of them.

Agnes was predeceased by her husband Frank and was the last of her immediate family: deceased in addition to her husband and parents are her siblings, Bertha Thompson, Genevieve Egbert, Nancy Prusak, Veronica Prusak, Clara Couderc, and Dorothy Bunevich.

Visitation will be held from 4 until 8 pm on Friday, February 2, 2024, in SALANDRA FUNERAL and CREMATION SERVICESS, INC. Joseph P. Salandra LFD owner/supervisor 304 West Pike Street Canonsburg. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at noon Saturday February 3, 2024, in St. Oscar Romero Parish St. Patrick Church 317 West Pike Street. Private interment will be in Woodruff Memorial Park Cemetery, immediately following. Those attending the Mass are asked to please park and meet at St Patrick Church. Private family time will be held in the funeral home before Mass.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Bevec Scholarship at St. Francis Xavier School in Medina, OH where her daughter Sr. Sandy was a principal, or Children's Wisconsin Foundation where Aggie's granddaughter Claire received a kidney transplant and extensive medical care.
